New to forums?

Post by Secret Squïrrel »

If you are unfamiliar with internet forums then the following information may be of assistance to you.

Many of your questions may already be answered in the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) link at the top of every page.

The Basics
Unlike our old Yahoo Group, this forum has a multi-layered structure. The forum is divided into a number of Categories (currently 3). Each Category has a number of sub-categories usually known in English as "Boards". All of the Boards are visible in their Categories on the main page of the forum.

If you click on a Board you will be taken to the list of Topics for that Board. Each Board may have many Topics. A Topic always contains at least one Post which is created by the person who started the Topic. This Post (and subsequent Posts) may be replied to by Registered Members with another Post. The series of Posts in a Topic is known as a conversation "Thread".

So, this Post that you're reading right now is the first in a Topic titled "New to forums?" which is in a Board called Forum Help which is in the Help and Support Category.
  • Category (Help and Support)
    • Board (Forum Help)
      • Topic (New to forums?)
        • Post (what you're reading now)

New Posts
The forum remembers which Topics you have previously opened while being logged in. If a Board contains "New" (for you) posts, the circle icon to the left of the Board description will show as red. This is a quick way to check and it saves you from having to look in every Board. You can also click on Quick Links at the top-left of every page and select Unread posts.

Private Messages
In addition to replying to a post from another member, you can also send them a Private Message ("PM"). Click on Private messages at the top-right of every page to read your PM's or write one to send to another forum member.

Personal Settings
There are a number of things that you can add to, or change within, your User Profile (personal link at top-right of every page).

You can set your timezone and preferred date format, change some things about how the forum looks to you, as well as add a picture ("avatar"), signature, or personal and social media information.

If you have any questions that are not answered by this post or the FAQ then feel free to ask in the Forum Help Board.
